Cycling

Cycling is normally the longest of the triathlon disciplines, in both terms of time and distance. For example, in a standard distance race the swim may take 20 mins, the cycle 1 hr and the run 40 mins, making the approximate time split 1/6th swimming 1/2 cycling and 1/3rd running.

The cycle can be of any length but normal distances would be as follows:

Age or Type of Triathlon Distance Special Conditions
Tristar Start (8yrs) 800m Grass 1.5km Tarmac (max) Must be Grass or Closed Roads
Tristar 1 (9/10) 2km Grass 4km Tarmac (max) Must be Grass or Closed Roads
Tristar 2 (11/12) 4km Grass 6km Tarmac (max) Must be Grass or Closed Roads Click picture
Tristar 3 (13/14) 6km Grass 8km Tarmac (max) Must be Grass or Closed Roads for Info on
Youth (15/16) May go up to Sprint Distance Entry Level
Sprint 20km Race Bikes
Standard 40km
Middle 80km
Long 130km
These are British Triathlon Distances - International Triathlon Union and Ironman distances differ
Training for cycling is slightly complicated for younger athletes because they find it difficult to be suitably protected on the road. One way for competent adults to take children (aged 11 and above and suitably capable of controlling a cycle) on the road is to travel behind and to the traffic side of the child. This way you not only protect the child from traffic but also can talk to and instruct the child as you go. When you come across an obstacle, such as a round about, you can then lead the child through for safety before inviting the child to come back through on your inside again.
Cycle training is done for 2 main purposes:
  1. To develop sufficient bike handling skills ....... and
  2. Building the strength to cycle both for distance, at slow pace for enjoyment, and at speed, for racing.

To develop speed and endurance the use of a static trainer (sometimes called a Turbo trainer) is sometimes ideal. It stops the nee to be concerned about traffic and also enables pedaling skills and pacing to be practiced very precisely.
