TRY-A-TURBO! (01 Feb '12)
You may have noticed that the club offer a weekly turbo session (Indoor Cycle) on a Tues night (see Cycling under Training) yet not have really appreciated what it entails or thought it wasn't for you!
The club own 8 turbo trainers which are available every Tuesday at the session. All you need to bring is yourself, your bike (any bike, does not need to be an all-singing-all-dancing road bike), a drink, a sweat towel and a warm layer to put on for the warm up/warm down.
A turbo trainer consists of a frame, a clamp, to hold the bicycle securely, a roller that presses up against the rear wheel, and a mechanism that provides resistance when the pedals are turned. Turbo trainers make it possible to build bicycle skills and power very efficiently in a controlled environment, without the unavoidable interruptions of outdoor riding. For instance, in hill training, instead of being limited to whatever hills are around one's home, one can simulate any size and steepness. Trainers provide better preparation for racing than stationary bikes. Turbos require better technique than stationary bicycles, and they provide a more realistic-feeling ride. They are ideal for when the weather is not conducive to riding outside.
The club session caters for all abilities from complete novice to seasoned triathletes as the session can be tailored to meet the athletes individual level/needs. It is a great way of getting a training session done in a fun, group environment where you feed off each others enthusiasm. Every week is a different session, set and led by the clubs coaches.
For the next 2 weeks, Michelle ( Feb 7th) and Neil (Feb 14th) will be taking the Tuesday turbo session and they are keen to introduce people to the wonders of turbo training in a supportive way. So if you have never tried a session, NOW is the time to come along and see what it's all about. |

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU! (2 Jan '12)
A wise man once said...If you don’t know where you are going, there is a fair chance you will end up somewhere else!
Have you set SMART goals for 2012? A SMART goal is one that is Specific, Measurable, Action orientated, Realistic and Time stamped.
Specific - Your objectives need to be specific, what exactly do you hope to achieve and why? Losing weight for example is not a smart goal because it is not specific enough. To be successful you need to understand why you want to lose weight and how much you want to lose?
Measurable - Your objectives need to be measurable. You need a way of measuring your progress to see whether you reach your target. This will allow you to tweak your action plan if needed, to get the desired results.
Action orientated - You need an action plan. How are you going to achieve what you want? What are the necessary steps? What are your daily, weekly and monthly tasks?
Remember, Goals + Actions = Results. Therefore you need to make a commitment towards implementing your action plan.
Realistic- Is your action plan and objective achievable? If not go back and tweak it such that it is.
Time stamped - Put a date on achieving your targets and ensure that you remain accountable.
The reason most people don’t achieve their goals is that they didn’t really set them in the first place. - Dr Dennis Waitley
Jetstream's Coaching Team are here to help you achieve your tri/racing goals for 2012. Please do discuss with us any specific goals/aspirations you have and make use of all the training sessions available to you as these will become race specific as we move into the new year and approach race season.
Happy New Year and good luck achieving your goals!

INTRODUCTION OF TEAMER.NET FOR CLUB COMMUNICATION (29 Nov'11)
Teamer.net is an online management system that uses the net, email and text messaging to send communication.
Jetstream will be using this system on occasion to send text messages to our club members. We can target specific groups of members to invite you to appropriate training or we can text out to everyone to give you up-to-the-minute information eg, in the event of needing to cancel a ride due to inclement weather.
You may be asked via the text message to reply "Y" (yes) or "N" (no). Simple and very quick to use! To reply to the text, you will pay no more than your standard rate charged by the phone company. So it's the same as texting a friend, Teamer adds no additional charge.
Teamer will NEVER share your details with a third party. All advertising and sponsorship on Teamer is handled directly by Teamer, no one else gets access to their user's information.

WELL DONE TIM! ( 27 Nov'11)
Congratulations to member Tim Churchill who completed his first half-marathon in Norwich today in a time of 1hr 52mins. He said he "loved it" which is lucky as Tim has plans of racing long-distance triathlons next year! |
BE SAFE!
Do you go out training on your own?! Have you ever considered what would happen if during a lonesome run or bike you were involved in an accident or something untoward happened and nobody knew who you were or how to contact your next of kin?!
Road ID was created on the concept that active people should wear ID as part of their gear when participating in outdoor activities. It was started by a couple of guys who began to wonder "why in the heck don't we have ID on us when we go out for a run or a ride?" They looked at their dogs, they had ID. But,they realised that if they had an unexpected accident, while running or cycling, they might be in bad shape - nobody would know who they were or who to contact. That freaked them out.
This Christmas why not buy a RoadID for the triathlete in your life or add it to your own Christmas wish list. Use the promotional code pcShopTW15 and receive 15% off your order up until 04/12/11. Further information or to order HERE |
JETSTREAM DINNER AFTER SWIMMING (25 Nov'11)

A good group of Jetstream members met up for pizza and pasta after swim training on Friday evening.
It was great to talk socially and find out more about each other, rather than how fast we swim!!
More events will be organised in the future - make sure you don't miss out!
Thanks to Darren for organising. |
FIRST JUNIOR / NOVICES TRAINING SESSION A GREAT SUCCESS (6 Nov'11)

Eleven Jetstream members, 5 children and 6 adults, turned up on an Autumnal Sunday morning for a two and a half hour session which included road safety/awareness for the younger members, using gears appropriately, making dead turns, riding taking one hand off at a time progressing to reaching for your water bottle and the older members had the opportunity to blast the circuit and ascend the hill multiple times.
The younger members were well supported riding in a small group of 4 with 2 coaches guiding them so they could each ride at their own pace with plenty of encouragment and help along the way.
The younger members were just fantastic! They listened to direction/instruction well and worked really hard to remember everything they were told and then put it into practice. So impressed to see the youngsters, with lots of encouragment and determination, battle the hill and succeed!
Lovely to see families attending sessions together as Jetstream is a family orientated club and we are here to develop both the younger members and the older members.

A MEMBER'S EXPERIENCE OF JETSTREAM TRAINING SESSIONS by ALISON CARROLL (3 Nov'11)
Last week my family decided to increase our attempts at training, so with my husband Peter and our two girls aged 11 and 9, we attended the Saturday run session at Bannisters. The differences in our ability levels did not matter as the exercises were designed to benefit everyone. Neil's calm manner was great for the kids and we came away keen to go to another. I learnt that technique makes all the difference to running and that coaching is invaluable for that.
Encouraged by my experience I then decided to go on the Sunday bike ride. Having only ever cycled round Hatch End before and only having a mountain bike meant that I was quite nervous. However I need not have worried as the leaders stayed with us in groups riding at our own pace, and I found that I could ride up hills, eventually. Everyone is friendly and encouraging so it is easy to join in. The Autumn scenery in the Chess Valley was beautiful, and we stopped for coffee and a rest in Amersham before heading back. A couple of hours and 28 miles later, I was very glad I had made the effort to go.

JETSTREAMERS RUN IN THE MOOR PARK 10K (25 Sep'11)
The annual Moor Park 10k race, organised to raise money for the Lynda Jackson MacMillan Centre, took place on 25th September this year. There were four Jetstreamers taking part (Trevor Hammond, Kevin & Amy Concannon and Sue Procter). Several other members were spotted in the crowds, clearly not wanting to put on their running shoes! Spied were Carolyn Hawkins, Neil, Jackie & Jack Spence and Neil Procter.Their excuse was one of being supporters which is apparently just as hard as running the 10k! |

ENGLISH CLUB CHAMPS (13 Sep'11)
On Sunday, two teams of 8 people represented Jetstream Tri Club at the English Club Champs at Milton Keynes.
The weather forecast had been terrible and we were all prepared for a cold and wet race. However the sun shone on us and despite it being a bit windy everyone raced well over the 750m lake swim, 20km bike and 5km run.
We had a mixture of people from seasoned triathletes to those doing their first open water race.
Thanks to all those friends and relatives who came and supported us - you helped make the race into a social and enjoyable club event. There were some very good triathletes competing and it was fiercely fought for the top honours but we certainly held our own and put in a good performance.

2011 OPEN WATER SWIM TRAINING STARTS(17 Apr'11)
The new lake at Thorpe Park proved to be a good new venue for open water swimming. It was 13 degrees in the water and the eight Jetstreamers who braved an early season swim all enjoyed a lovely open water session. The lake was very clear and we were in for around 45 mins with Bryan supporting us on the bank. Roll on some more sessions - it was great to be back in open water again.
